Every day in the U.S., it seems that there’s a new anti-LGBTQ+ law introduced somewhere in this country. I don’t blame any of my fellow queer babes for wanting to take a trip outside the country and explore. So let’s talk about the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries to add to your travel bucket list! Safety is hugely important when we’re traveling as LGBTQ+ people, so it’s always good to do your research before booking a trip. I hope that this post makes that process a bit easier and gives you a good place to start!

We have a comment ready from Jonathan Meery, CEO of MoneyTransfers.com:
“The world has changed a lot over the past three decades, and that includes many countries’ attitudes towards the LGTBQ+ community. However, it’s worth remembering that it was only in this millennium that gay marriage was first legalized in any country – and while some countries made great strides in attitudes and laws to protect the LGBTQ+ community, there is still work to do.”

1. Iceland

LGBTQ+ friendly countries

Iceland is considered to be one of the best places for LGBTQ people to live. This means that the locals have very liberal attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. They’ve had full marriage equality recognized by the courts since 2015. Same-sex couples have equal access to adoption and IVF, and there are laws in place to protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination of any kind. Iceland features wild terrain like volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs.

2. Canada – LGBTQ+ Friendly Countries

You can see how much we loved Canada’s National Pride! Same-sex relationships are legal and accepted, and same-sex marriage and adoption are legal. Discrimination against an LGBTQ+ person is illegal and there are laws in place to protect people against discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender identity. Canada is considered one of the safest places to live and visit for LGBTQ+ people!

3. Isle of Man

LGBTQ+ friendly countries

The island decriminalized homosexuality in 1992 and has passed laws to protect LGBTQ people from employment discrimination. They also introduced the right to adopt children and enter a civil partnership and civil marriage. The island has lots of Celtic and Viking heritage complete with whimsical views and castles.

4. Uruguay – LGBTQ+ Friendly Countries

The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2013, and same-sex couple adoption was legalized in 2019. They have anti-discrimination laws in place to protect every individual’s rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Uruguay is known for its beach-lined coast, art deco buildings, and old port markets and piers.

5. Norway

There are many discrimination protections, marriage equality, and same-sex adoption is legal. They also have great trans healthcare policies. Norway is known for seeing the northern lights, colorful wooden houses, and outdoor/winter sports.

Countries to Avoid

It is just as important to know what countries to avoid when booking a trip. The least safe places for us to visit are Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia.

“While LGBTQ+ people face discrimination, and are unable to travel some parts of the world freely for fear of their very lives, no country can say they have done everything they can to support and protect this community. By shedding some light on the freedoms – and lack of – LGBTQ+ people have around the world, we hope we can help to ignite a conversation on what more can be done.” Jonathan Meery, CEO of MoneyTransfers.com
